Things are cooking with the THMS Culinary Arts Club!! We have met twice this year so far and have a delightful group of both 8th and 6th graders. The first week students baked up Macaroni and Cheese from scratch and it was an absolute success, everyone enjoyed this delightful dish.
For our second meeting we decided to take advantage of the season and local produce! Miss. Joy went apple picking in Hope, Maine and brought the apples in for the Culinary Arts Club to use in making Apple Crisp. The consensus on this recipe however was that it was too watery and we discussed how not adding the water called for in the recipe may have helped this situation.
Our next meeting will be October 12th. What will we be cooking up this time you ask? It's a surprise!!

The Empty Bowls dinner went well for our first time. We were able to raise over $450 dollars for the Belfast Soup Kitchen! The kids had fun and a lot of people walked away with very cool bowls made by the High School Arts Honor Society and Jody Johnstone. Ideas have already been discussed to make next year's event bigger and better!
The Culinary Arts Club has hit a lull in our meetings due to the crazy schedule of some of our members :) We are hoping to be able to fit in a few meetings before the end of the year. Perhaps a final dinner in June would be appropriate.
Next year new members will be welcomed and I hope a lot of student choose to join this great club that teaches a skill that you can use your entire life.

TACOS!!
The Culinary Arts Club had a fantastic afternoon yesterday cooking up tacos from scratch. We used a variety of spices to recreate the taste you get in a taco seasoning packet without all the added salt and the girls loved it!! Some of the braver souls tasted vegetarian tacos which consisted of a traditional taco made with a substance called vegetarian crumble. There was no consensus however how it tasted, some thought it was "gross" and others felt they couldn't tell the difference between the vegetarian crumble and hamburger meat.
Our next meeting will March 28 where we will be baking cup cakes and perhaps if there is time learning a bit about cake decorating!!

We just had a very successful meeting on March 7th. The club made Chicken Noodle Soup which the students thoroughly enjoyed eating afterward. This soup was made in preparation for our Empty Bowls Dinner which will take place on April 1st. The club will be meeting on March 26th to make soup for this dinner so we have been testing out a variety of soup recipes in preparation for this event.
On March 14th the THMS Culinary Arts Club will be making scones and finger sandwiches and having a tea party!

What's Cooking
The THMS Culinary Arts Club is an after school club started by Miss. Joy for students who love to cook and bake. We have made all sorts of great food this year including Tomato Basil Soup, Corn Chowder, Chocolate Chip Cookies, Apple Muffins, Homemade Macaroni and Cheese and Savory Turkey Cobbler. The main purpose of the club is to teach students how to cook and bake so that they can learn valuable life skills which they will use the rest of their lives. We also try real hard to have fun and I think we have been successfully meeting all our goals thus far this year.
Please stay tuned for pictures and to learn more about our Empty Bowls Dinner on April 1st.
