Off to a good start...

The Troy Howard Middle School Culinary Arts Club continues for another year.  There are several new members joining us this year as well as a few returnees.  As Fall Sports get done we will likely have one or two members joining us at this time.  It should be a fun and productive year in Culinary Arts.

We started the year off with Macaroni and Cheese cupcakes by Gooseberry Patch cookbooks. I was not impressed with this recipe.  Corn starch took the place of the usual roux that is usually used to thicken the cheese sauce, and the "cupcakes" did not hold their shape.  I was unable to catch a taste of the final product, but the kids did seem to enjoy their culinary creations.  I do believe in the future that I will stick to "my" recipe, but it never hurts to try new things.

On October 2nd the Culinary Arts Club made Apple Turnovers with apples purchased from Hooper's Orchard and a Button and Bows recipe found on the Betty Crocker website.   However we did not have the Bisquick that the recipe called for, so we attempted to make our own Bisquick and this is where things got dicey.  The replacement for the Bisquick called for 1 Tbsp of Baking Powder...way to much, and consequently the dough was too dry to work with.  We were able to add more milk, but the resulting dough was overworked.  Just not a successful result.

Let's hope that next meeting goes a bit more smoothly.  Our next meeting will be October 16th at 2:30.
